The snows have gone, nature awakens and the countryside blossoms turning into a wonderful, green and pleasant land. The long hours of daylight and the pleasant temperatures in the land of the midnight sun make Swedish Lapland the perfect place for a summer holiday.
The quiet village of Åskilje will be your base for your time here and is well situated beside the E12 (The Blue Highway) which runs from Umea on the Baltic coast through to Mo I Rana on the Norwegian coast and offers visitors the perfect opportunity to explore the whole region.
Close to two local airports at Gunnarn and Lycksele, you will be greeted on arrival by our local guide who will transfer you either to hire car or direct to your chosen accommodation.
You may wish to use your time by simply relaxing and enjoying the peace, beauty and nature of Åskilje or you may want to use this as your base from which to travel and explore the whole region, car hire, bikes, rowing boats, kayaks and an efficient local bus service will help
Walk through the lush forests and enjoying peaceful nature and wildlife, enjoying a picnic, white-water rafting through whirling rapids, canoeing, cycling or hiking across mighty mountains, spending time at a sunny beach by the sea on the Baltic coast. No matter whether you are looking for an adrenalin rush or simply peace, beauty and culture, we believe you will find your perfect stress free holiday here in Västerbotten. Adults and children alike can get back to nature without the expensive distractions of modern day life.
Åskilje village is situated almost centrally between Lycksele and Storuman so if you feel that you want to escape the countryside and you can easily visit both of the above by bus or car
The county's cities and towns have rivers, lakes, docks and beaches where you can cool off, the Baltic and Norwegian coasts are a manageable drive away, make an early start!
The accommodation options:
We now offer clients the opportunity to rent a selection of traditional Swedish country cottages set amongst the trees and close to the waters edge in the delta where the two rivers meet, these traditional old properties are comfortable, well equipped for self catering breaks and are ideal groups of friends or families who long to experience true nature, rural living and the way thinks used to be. Throughout the summer months we also offer fully serviced camp site facilities at reasonable rates, you can bring your own tent or rent an erected one. There is a well stocked shop within the village, the local campsite has cafe, tennis court and offers boat, kayak and cycle hire. The resident guide offers various exciting country activities, advice, airport transfers and you can hire him for sightseeing trips and road transfers to local towns and areas of interest.
Local buses pass close by on the main E12 every two hours, running a return service from Umea on the Baltic coast as far as Mo I Rana in Norway and calling at all major towns such as Storuman and Lycksele. There are many pleasant activities available in Lycksele including the zoo, shops, water-park and interesting museums
The Cottages:
Each cottage has electricity, fridge/freezer, shower room and WC and kitchen utensils
Each cottage sleeps 4 persons, however one offers summer house accommodation for two extra
Return airport transfers from Gunnarn are also included in the prices shown
Cottages available at: £250.00 per week or just £40.00 per day April - October
Return flights; from Gatwick, Nottingham EM and Edinburgh via Stockholm can be arranged from just: £195.00 pp (a small admin fee is charged) or if you prefer you can arrange you own flights and we will collect you from Gunnarn or Lycksele* airports.
Local car hire: – at reasonable rates can also be pre-arranged if required.

Some things to do in Vasterbotten:
Golf:
The Västerbotten summer is a golfer's dream. The midnight sun makes golfing and practice possible at any time of the day. You'll find some of northern Sweden's best golf courses with a varied range of style with most of the courses in close proximity to the major towns
Swimming:
The fresh, unpolluted waters of the region offer an almost endless number of opportunities, but for the excitement of a super water park then why not visit and spend a day at the Ansia Water Park in Lycksele
White Water Rafting:
The Vindelälven River's whirling waters are considered some of the world's best for white-water rafting. The impressive countryside offers some fantastic outdoor experiences and challenges. Travelling in a rubber raft or boat with the water just below your feet is the best way to feel the unbridled power of this protected wild river. The beautiful Byskeälven River also offers wet adventures for fearless visitors
Go Carting & Motor Sports:
Go-karting is a fast-paced sport with indoor and outdoor tracks that can be enjoyed both winter and summer. The high speeds, the race car-like vehicles, and the enthusiastic competitors make it feel like Formula 1. Available at Karansbo in Lycksele
Canoeing:
Canoeing is a great way to experience Västerbotten's amazing scenery and nature. You can hire a kayak from Åskilje camping in the village
Cycling:
If you prefer to see the county by bicycle, you can hire a bike from Åskilje camping in the village and explore, perfect for families and individuals. Here you can ride the quiet roads or take relaxing outings through lush forests, all at your own pace
Fishing:
Anglers have their pick of fantastic waters in Västerbotten. From peaceful mountain lakes to frothy rapids, there's plenty of fishing opportunities to choose from. The Byske Salmon Valley with the free flowing salmon-rich Byskeälven River attracts fishermen and outdoorsmen from throughout Europe
Caving:
The Västerbotten Mountains have many caves, and there are many outfitters who organise underground tours. In Kåtaviken, near Hemavan, visitors can take Grottstigen, a hiking trail that showcases different types of caves and limestone formations typical for the area
Bird Watching:
The Vasterbotten region of Swedish Lapland therefore offers the chance of seeing both the northern specialities as well as experiencing the bird communities more typical of Continental Europe An impressive range of habitats from the alpine and boreal ecosystems in the north to the temperate broadleaved woodlands of the south
Climbing:
Both sport climbers and traditional climbers will find exciting challenges; Blåberget is one of Sweden's best cliff climbing mountains with around 30 equipped trails up to 60 meters high around the 300 meter wide mountain. Just outside of Åsele is Offerhällen with excellent crack lines and several marked trails. The Umeå area offers a selection of smaller rock faces, such as Vallberget, Tavelsjöberget, and Holmsundsklippan. If you prefer indoor climbing, there's a 14-metre high and 6-metre wide climbing wall at the Vitberg area in central Skellefteå. Umeå climbers can test IKSU's 10-metre wall
Art & Crafts:
Art and handcrafts are available exhibited and sold in galleries, museums, shops and workshops throughout the county. You can see beautiful delicate glass works, robust iron-works and ceramics while also meeting artists in their creative environments. See how a knife is made, inspect the quality of local textiles or browse among the local products at handcraft shows
Sami Culture:
Sami culture is much more than just reindeer. You can learn about the Sami and their culture in many ways: by talking with the people, hearing their stories, seeing their art, appreciating their music and delving into their traditions and history. Ask your guide at Åskilje camping in the village he will be happy to advise and arrange a visit for you
Riding:
On horseback out in the wilderness, you really feel like you are a part of nature. Riding in Västerbotten is great fun both summer and winter. Make your way across white vistas or at the height of summer. The horses lead the way with their powerful legs up the sides of mountains and through the valleys. Using real horsepower allows you to listen to and experience nature first hand, listen to the crunching of the snow under hooves or the bird songs by a babbling brook

At Norrbyskär you can test your balance on the high trapeze, the climbing tower, the super swing and logs and ropes
